You all have heard it, cavernous arenas filled with fans, many of them chanting, urging, “Defense! Defense! DEFENSE!”

Coaches and players – and the talking heads on TV – all give lip service to “stops” and it’s always been that way: we talk about defense … but play offense.

Playing defense gets you awards. Playing offense gets you more money. My old buddy and roomie, John (Red) Kerr, used to say, “De-fence goes round the house.”

Until the NBA enforces rules against palming and running with the ball – are there any left, by the way? — the offense will continue to have a great advantage over the defense.

And it will continue to go round the house.
