It’s been a matter of perfect timing for the Atlanta Hawks, who fended off a Golden State invasion Friday night and assumed the NBA’s top record. Notwithstanding a spate of front-office controversy at season’s beginning, the Hawks are tearing through a league overloaded with children playing with children, key players out with injuries, a general lack of urgency and a whole lot of damaged (bad) teams. Coach Mike Budenholzer — also serving as GM in the wake of Danny Ferry’s Luol Deng-inspired leave of absence — has gotten a moderately talented team to not only play together, but to care for one another — and the result has been a bundle of fun for all concerned. So why should anyone be surprised?
