Sunday night, the Phoenix Suns brought back Kevin Johnson to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of his playoff dunk over Houston Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon. But, speaking of anniversaries, there was none in New Orleans, a week ago, to recall the 50-year anniversary of a threatened player boycott at the 1964 All-Star game in Boston. The outcome was considerably more dramatic than KJ’s vault over a whimsical Olajuwon. By holding up the start of the game – first one to be nationally televised – the all-stars forced the owners to bow to their demand for a pension plan, now long since enjoyed by all retired NBA players. Alas, such memories aren’t often recalled in this day and age. More people than you would think seem to have forgotten the NBA existed prior to 1990. My book covers this dramatic episode in detail and you ought to love it.
