Defensive Rules 1 and 2 :
Oops, I almost forgot to tell you who Scotty McDonald was.  Scotty McDonald was a player and a coach in the Pete Newell – Phil Woolpert era, from the 50’s-80’s.  He also was a lawyer and it was said “that he worked as a lawyer-but lived as a basketball coach”.  Pete Newell was a basketball icon and was well known for the Pete Newell “Big Man’s Camp”.  Phil Woolpert coached Bill Russell and Casey Jones to the NCAA championship.  McDonald’s 30 Defensive rules came on the scene when he became a part time defensive consultant for the Phoenix Suns.  Joe Gilmartin in his book, “The Little Team That Could and …Darn near Did” and published by the Phoenix Suns in 1976, talks about Scotty’s role and their late season success.  Some of the rules and terminology have changed but it is the same stuff presented a little differently but with a whole lot of passion.

In his introduction, he ask each player to quote ” read them aloud to themselves, sing them to each other, memorize them, quiz each other about them-love these rules or hate them if you wish but follow them.

Rule #1: “Don’t concede  operation to the other team to let it do what it wants to do as a team-take away the other team’s operation.”.

Rule #2: ” Don’t concede individual operation to any individual enemy-take away the individual operation of that enemy.
