The Spurs win because they are strong from the top down. The Owner stays out of sight so not many people even know who he is. His glory comes in the brief moments when, on national TV, he accepts the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. The General Manager is pretty much a low-key guy, also. He has blended together a roster of domestic and international players and, whether by design or not, it works. The Coach, most revered in the league, also has more power than any of his NBA brethren. He has a system and players do it his way. If not, he sits them, or gets on them – always with an eye toward things getting done his way. The Players – fully nine of them born outside the U.S. — come to play every night. They seem to have a built-in motivation to prove they belong with their American counterparts. In addition, any player or family indiscretions are handled internally with a minimum of fall-out. Lastly, The Owner’s moment of glory is by design. Believe it. For years, Jerry West was rarely seen when owner Jerry Buss was accepting the O’Brien trophy. ###
