The NBA transformation going on now is almost comical.  The Analytics want to eliminate the mid-range jumper  because you get more bang for your buck shooting 3s.  Here are some other keen observations they have produced:
— If a defender is within three feet of the shooter, the shooting percentage drops 12 per cent (a 50 per cent shot becomes a 38 per cent shot).

— Field goal percentage drops one point for every 1.5 feet away from the rim.

— Field goal percentage on catch-and-shoot plays is higher than expected for the distance of the shot.

My favorite: The Data Tracker “reveals” players who are open score more points than players who are defended when the ball arrives .

Who knew?

Meanwhile, the NBA guys are shaking their heads and denying their product is not a video game or fantasy basketball.
