James Dolan, the irrepressible owner of the clown-like New York Knicks, last week engineered the Madison Square Garden banishment of former star Charles Oakley. Two days later, Dolan returned yet another ex-Knick, Latrell Sprewell, to a front-row seat. Sprewell, a big talent and an even bigger screwball, himself had been absent 13 years from the Garden. He is best remembered for one day at practice choking Golden State Warrior coach P.J. Carlesimo for ten seconds before teammates and assistant coaches thought to intervene. The Knicks then took him off the Warriors’ hands in time for the lockout-shortened 1999 season. Dolan, the one constant amid all this nonsense, was the man in charge back then, too.
